Can someone(or more) tell me the likely cause of grinding coming from the left rear when I apply the brakes plus a sqeak. It grinds on and off as the wheel rotates so souds like a pad or something is out of line.I know nothing about repairing brakes so need a real basic description of what I should check out please!
The car was in my local garage for another job and I assumed the rear pads would need replacing and had a set ready ,but was told the pads on were only a quarter or so worn. The mechanic had a quik check but did not spot anything wrong-not that mechanics here know much about Vette's.
What is likely to be the problem-the brakes work fine but the noise if frustating.
Thanks for your help.
Don't know for sure on the 85 vette, but some cars (brake pads) have a wear sensor which is simply a small metal tab that contacts the rotor when the pads are getting low. It will cause a loud squeal. Best thing to do is take the wheel off and look for marks on the rotor. If it is a wear sensor you can just bend it up for now, until you get the pads changed. And as the post above, if it does it on and off your rotors could be warped.
If it is not the pads or a warped rotor, it could be the shield. Mine got some gravel stuck in between it and the rotor and was grinding the gravel to dust.
Pull the rear wheel and see if you can isolate the noise. Good luck !
