Default 87 Coupe Newbie

Greetings all... I am now the proud owner of a new to me 1987 Corvette Coupe. Still wearing the smile after 2 weeks of owning and 2 weeks of work. Waiting for the repair manual to arrive, Amazon and USPS are REAL slow these days. I have a grocery list of questions:

1. Blower motor only works on high. Replaced resistor and still nothing. got out my old test light and tested at resistor lights up fine, then pulled manual blower unit, and seems power there also. Next test was at Blower motor plug. Stuck in the test light and saw a dim light until I turned the switch on high and then full light. Any suggestions like relay maybe?

2. Dash cluster worked fine until I turned on headlights and nothing. Sent it off to be rebuilt, received a call today telling me they thought the photo cell was flakey and they replaced it. Then I was asked if the lower quadrant of tachometer worked, I said yes it worked fine. They said it didn't when it arrived looks like some small cracks. So now I have to get a new tachometer. Question, looking on ebay someone has one and they say it comes with install instructions. I built PC's on the side for people, so I have an understanding of electronics and can only do bull work as a mechanic, what am I getting myself into trying to replace this myself.

3. After doing a tune-up (man plug no.1 is a bear to get started back ) and after cleaning sticky throttle linkage and plate, was letting it run and rev’d the engine a little and now code 34. I had previously sprayed the throttle body with carb cleaner and that seemed to help gas peddle which was sticky, Ran fine for a few days and after the one rev code 34. Dash cluster is still out put I don’t think this anything to do with it.

4. Biggest problem was changing oil and topping off fluids and the radiator overflow and I noticed something in there and it looked like oil. When the dash cluster was in there it never ran hotter than 192deg and there is nothing yellow or foam on dipstick. Looking inside the oil filler on passenger side head it looks to have been replaced you can still see the aluminum inside and it has 84k on her. Intake manifold or gasket? Looking at engine thermostat gasket looks brand new so someone has been in there.

Any help on any of these would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome...to the 87 family:
I've completely redone mine and if i can be of any help, let me know:
1. I'll have to check the FSM - or maybe someone will chime in
2. Great info and diags for clusters: http://www.batee.com/corvette/
3. MAF sensor: a. disconnect the neg post for 30 sec to clear codes; b. disconnect the maf and see how she runs, if fine then you should get code 33 and you'll prob need to replace it; * there is a possibility that one of the relays are bad, they are the same PN for both relays, try that first before going with the MAF purchase.
4. Tune-up: you should set the TPS and IAC as part of the tune-up, and make sure to disconnect the EST before setting the timing.
5. Overflow: That could be just gunk, clean and flush radiator and do 50/50 mix....clean overflow tank well.. Don't forget to burp the system after you drain and fill radiator or you'll get idiot lite.

Hope this helps...

Coupeguy,

I wish I could say it was something other than snow but living in northeastern Ohio snowbelt we get our share and then some. The pictures were actually from the person I purchased the car from. For the time I have had it the only time it is out is if there are no clouds or birds in the sky, which in February and early March isn't too many days.

The photo cell is a common problem. I just bypassed mine. Check out the link from vinnies87 as it will show you how to replace the LCDs. If you've worked on PCs, you can open up the digital cluster without a problem

I agree, probably not a problem.

Congrats on the nice 87.

Ghkal - thanks for the vote of confidence, I am going to give it a shot just hope it isn’t an expensive lesson if I determine part way through this is over my head. Have been reading the links others posted about working on the dash, had I known that the tachometer LCD was cracked I would have opted to buy a refurbished one instead of having a rebuild and now a LCD replace. Doesn’t seem like I saved much on that adventure, but another lesson learned.

As for the gunk in the overflow, I am going to drain and flush this weekend I hope, weather providing.

Agent 86 – thank you for the links. I had ordered a Childens but since they had shipped it yet I cancelled and now ordered a Helms, based off what I have read here that seems to be the preferred choice. As a note users should watch what they order from a company called Motolit. It is really hard if not impossible to get an answer from these folks regarding an order. They seem to show a lot of manuals on-line
but also there are a lot of forums where people do not have a lot of nice things to say about them as to shipping and communications.
