I have a 1990 Conv. that is new to me last fall. This replaced my 77. I need to replace the middle cat as it is making a sound like a ball rolling around inside. Does anyone know if the X cross frame has to be removed? Plus would it be a good time to change the fuel filter, this ride only has 53K miles on it.
Thanks for a great forum !!
If you're going to do the work yourself, I'd definitely remove the X-brace. It's not much trouble at all.
But FIRST, get the car in the air, remove the X-brace, do your exhaust work, re-install the X-brace, THEN put the car back on earth. Not a big deal - I ordered a new one when I took mine off and with it and the exhaust out of the way, there's lots of room to do some much-needed cleaning, assuming your convertible's got more than a few thousand miles on it.
If it's questionable how long the filter has been in there, I would go ahead and change it while you have the x-brace off. You may want to plan on cleaning/ painting the brace as well. Mine was rusted in spots.

Good luck.

I took my x brace off last winter, fixed some dents and repainted it and put it back on. Last fall I took out my cat with the x brace on the car and switched the main cat with a test pipe I made for a while. No problems getting the cat in and out with the x brace on the car.
