Default Crank Sensor Location???

Can anyone tell me where the crank sensor location is on a '93?

I just got a call from a friend who wanted to know, but I gave my shop manual away when I sold my 94.

Thanks,

Bob K.

There isn't a crank sensor on a 93, just the optispark. Robert

I noticed a crank sensor in a diagram in my '92 service manual the other day. It was on the right side of the block down low, near the motor mount. I think it was only ZR-1 though.

Bob K. was actually posting for me, as my account had not yet been activated. I'm trying to find out some info for my father - 93' C4 ~ 75k. He was driving the car last year and it just quit on him. The car cranked, but would not fire. He had it towed back to his house and did the basics - checked for spark, but there was no spark. So he looks at a diagram in the manual for a 95' and suspects it could be a crank sensor; however, it would appear based on this post that the 93' is different and does not have a crank sensor. He stated that when the car was running it had a flat spot during acceleration. Another interesting point to note is that he replaced a leaking water pump last fall and this is around the time the problem started. Is it possible that this could be related, e.g. antifreeze got in to the optispark? If I'm understanding it correctly, essentially the optispark is the distributor for the the LT1? Is this a serviceable part or better of replacing it? It just seems coincidental to me that the water pump issue occurred and then this issue. Needless to say after jumping the car today it did start but he was not inclinded to chance a drive!!!! Any suggestions?

Yes, there's a very good chance your problem is related to the waterpump leak. It's very common for the waterpump to leak and cause problems with the optispark, especially on 1992-94 cars because the earlier opti design was not vented and is more susceptible to moisture.

The optispark is the distributor for the LT1 and LT4 engines. It is a replace-only part. There are a couple aftermarket systems that are costly but eliminate the problems associated with the optispark.

If it's running ok now, drive it and see how it goes. It's possible the opti dried out and it'll run ok. If not, an optispark replacement is probably in order. It's a fairly big job... you'll have to remove that new waterpump, the balancer, etc. Good luck!

Scan it for codes and 16 and 36 are optispark failure codes. If it has failed, which does sound likely, replace the entire optispark. Not a fun job, but it can be done in one day.

Quick question, going by the 95 manual and the crank sensor suspect, it stated that the tach should move when the engine is cranked. If the tach didn't move than you would suspect a bad crank sensor. Can a similar theory be drawn to this issue despite it not havig a crank sensor since it is a 93'? Is it possible that this could be a clue, being as the tach was not moving whent he car was cranked over? What is the tach on a 93 connected to?

95s don't have a CPS either. What "manual" are you using?
