Default Any point in this mod for me?

Currently have:

1987
SuperRam, (portmatched runner/plennum)
Stock base
1.6 Promagnum Roller Rockers, with ARP studs, harded push rods,Guideplates.
stock heads.
Stock cam.
LT headers, and no cats.
+ all the free and small mods.

Would a LPE 211/219 duration and 530/560 lift (with 1.6 rockers) do me any good?
I will change the base to the SR base too, when doing this mod.

Can you "hear" the LPE 219 cam at idle??

that cam would be a great compliment to your current combo. if you have the stock l98 cam, changing to the 219 cam would make a tremendous difference, especially if you include the matching accell base.

i dont think that the 219 cam has any lope to it, i could be wrong.

The better question would be whether the rest of that had any point if you werent planning on doing the camshaft upgrade.

219 would be the best option obviously, as its made for the SR. You can hear a slight lope at idle on a 350.

From what I've seen, the stock heads will support a maximum of about 280 RWHP.

I'd guess you're at about 250 RWHP now, so there is some room for improvement with an intake base and cam upgrade. Maybe 25-30 HP worth. I think its worth it.

For the costs involved, you may want to consider a base upgrade and some better heads, with the camshaft as an option, since you will soon be thinking about better heads anyway....

Base + Cam approximate cost = $800-1000
Base + Heads approximate cost = $1500-$2000
Base + Heads + Cam approximate cost = $2000 ->

Default lope

My 87 has a Comp Cam with 224-230 duration .512 lift with 1.6 rockers and it lets everyone know its not stock. performance should be very noticeable too.

Lars, with all your mods so far, don't shortchange yourself. Seriously budget for: heads, the 219/219 cam, and the SR base. Try for find a used base if you can. and you can sell your stock heads and recoup $300-400.

the 211/219 cam would be fine with SR base, ported plenum and large tube runners.

in my 355, the cam does have a noticeable lope -- mild but noticeable. the car shakes slightly at idle. it is in tune. by hearing it there is no way it passes for a stock setup. which is perfect for me.

Change the cam and port those heads--it would be cheap to do that.

maybe, maybe not. the stock heads? $500-700 for a proper port job. hopefully a good source that won't screw them up. another couple hundie for valvetrain component replacements/upgrades. by then you're in aftermarket head territory. as i mentioned, then you can sell the stock heads for a couple hundie back. just my thoughts.

Lars,

I'm also running a 224/230 cam with my SR. Its a Comp 503 with 224/230 duration at 0.050, 112 lsa, 0.503/0.510 lift with 1.5 rockers.

I think its a good match for the SR and otherwise stock motor. Mine makes peak HP around 5200 rpm and makes good power to 6000 rpm and beyond.

Here's a dyno pull (with a rich tune):

I'd say the power band is between 4200 and 6000 rpm. I like to shift the lower gears right around 6000 rpm which is just over 40 mph in 1st, 60 in 2nd and 90 in 3rd, with my 4+3 and 3.73 gears.

I wanted a cam that would rev-out just a bit so I went a little bigger than the standard 219.

How is your idle? And how does the idle sound?

I just got 1,6 Pro mags, so ill keep those in case og a cam switch.

At 850-900 rpm where I usually like to idle, there is only a slight lope, maybe a little crackle.

I can make it lope more of course, if I want to idle it down to 700 rpm.

I need to record some sound clips, I have one, but the quality is pretty poor and you have to turn it up to hear anything. It is not really representative of the sound.

Somebody posted a nice video and sound clip of this cam recently with magnaflows, and it sounded great. I can't recall who it was though.

It was a post entitled something like "here's what it sounds like at idle..."
