Default Another spark plug removal question

Hi,

I have an 87 aluminum head with 17k miles the plugs and wires are original.
Seems like lots of people speculate about ripping threads out ect.
Has anybody actually taken the plugs out and do the threads come with it. I would be just fine leaving the plugs in but think it might not be a bad idea to change them along with wire cap rotor.

The plugs have male thread and the heads female thread, only the plug comes out. Is that what you are asking? The miles are so low I would leave it alone unless there are tune up time symptoms, rough idle etc.

Are you worried due to the time in the head the threads may have seized and would strip on removal?

So long as you use some antiseize on the spark plug threads there will be no issue removing them from Al heads.

But I agree, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

It seems to me sooner or later you are going to have to bite the bullet. Use a good wrench, perhaps try some wd40 sparingly and go at it.

If I had a 1987 car with the original plugs, I would replace them. Some hints if you decide to remove the plugs:
1. Remove the plugs when the engine is cold.....not hot or warm. This will reduce the chance of "pulling threads" out of the aluminum heads.
2. Remove each plug wire and blow compressed air in the recess where the spark plug enters the aluminum head. This will reduce the chance of an dirt or other material entering the cylinder.
3. The spark plugs are somewhat difficult to remove. I found a 3/8 inch special tool to make plug removal easier. The tool is a 3/8 inch ratchet and it has the capability of turning the driver (spark plug socket) with a lever in the ratchet handle. If you want a picture of this tool, send me a PM or post you need.
4. Coat the new plug threads with Anit-Seize compound (sparingly) prior to assembly. NAPA has the compound.
Someday, you are going to have to cross the "remove spark plug" bridge!
