Anyone have a clue for this one? Ocassionally my '91 L98 seems like it is firing at the wrong time and kicking back on the starter when I try to start it. It seems to be related to the ignition because when it is doing this if I pull the red wire off the distributer it turns over fine but obviously won't start in this condition. It eventully starts and seems to run just fine. Just get this on start up. Any ideas? I'd like to get an educated guess or two rather than just shotgunning parts.

Well no help. I'm thinking I may try the distributer cap just in the event there may be some carbon tracking in there that could be lighting the cylinders at the wrong time.

Default More info

Well I'm still futzing with this. I have made another discovery. The Intake air temperature is a lot different from the oil and coolant temp on a cold engine (arizona cold) after it has sat overnight the oil and coolant read in the 80's. The intake temp is 177. I hooked up a new sensor to the engine harness and it reads the same thing. I also measured the sensor resistance and it is about right for the actual air temperature. Here is the good part. the tests in the manual give the exact opposite result the book says. If I simply disconnect the sensor the scanner shows 392. If I put a jumper in the connector it reads -40. In case you are doubter like me I did the following to satisfy myself that it was indeed working backward. Took the sensor and packed it in ice. Result......yep the temperature indicated on the scanner started going up. Wierd eh? This is kind of looking like a bad ECM to me anyone have any comments or similar experience?

Do you get the 1-2 code for six times when you connect A & B terminals on the ALDL connector? The repeat of the 1-2 for six times usually indicates all is well with the ECM.

Do get the 1-2 but what could cause this craziness with the temp indication. Wires are ok and sensor is ok there's nothing else but the ECM in that part of the system.
