Default Oil change

First off I feel dumb for asking, but everyone has their first time.
I always had some place change my oil, but I am always mad at the way that they treat my car. So if you want it done right do it yourself.
I have never changed my own oil.
All I have to do is drain the old oil, change the filer, and put oil back in, right?
How much oil do I put back in?
What kind of oil filter to use?
Anything else I need to know?
I really feel lame for not knowing all this, i'm really not that dumb

Yep - that is about it. I get all my vehicles messed up, though. I think the Vette is somewhere between 5-6 qts. I (and probably 90% of every other C4 and newer owner) use Mobil-1. Be sure to take a look at your owners manual. I cant remember the filter of the top of my head, but have always been able to get them at Wal-Mart.

good luck.

The fram filter ends in the number 30 cant remember the whole number either 5 quarts when you change your filter 4 if you leave the filter... Could be any easier, although sometimes those filters can be awfully tight I like the screw driver through the side method of turning it loose :)

enhance,

You pretty much have it all. Make sure you put 1/2 quart or little less in the new filter before you install it. The stock capacity in the LT1 is 4.5 quarts. Use Mobil 1 5w30 as recommended in the owners manual and I use (and would recommend) the AC Delco PF52 filter.

The oil drain is a 14mm bolt and you may want to pick up one of the filter wrenches that fit on the end of the filter and use a socket wrench. This is only for when you remove the old filter, install the new filter with just your hands. Maybe tighten 1/2 turn past hand tight for good measure.

You manual will recommend an oil meeting GM 4718M for the LT-1 engine. It will also recommend 5W-30 and allow 10w-30.

Here is a link to a study done on oil filters by a layman:
http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

[Note: this is actuall a mirror of the orginal minimopar sight which I can't find.]

Engine should be warmed up before change. While it cools a little you can hit the grease joints. Lift and support the car properly, and to allow the oil to fully drain. Might as well use a good filter, only costs a couple of bucks more. Use a rag to clean the mating surface for the oil filter, and make sure the old gasket did not stick to the engine. Use a light wipe (with you finger) of new oil on the new gasket. Hand tighten new filter about 1/4 to 3/4 turn after gasket contact - sort of a feel for this. Reinstall drain plug, lower car and install oil - but not quite all. Let it settle for 5 or 10 minutes, then check level. Fill to normal with what oil you have left. Reset oil light if you have one.

Ideas for free time during process: Lube hood latches, door latches, use silicone dielectric grease on all weatherstriping, clean out gas tank door drain, extend antenna and clean (wd-40) and lube (thin mineral oil), check torque on wheel lugs, top up fluids (PS, AF, cleaner, etc.)

Have fun.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? if its cold there, go for the 5w, if it relatively pleasant you can go with the 10w, its viscosity at startup, after the car is warm they both act as a 30 weight oild and have the same flow characteristics. the 5w was introduced as an alternative to the straight weight oils of the past that were literally sludge and thick if a heavy weight and had poor flow characteristics, this way you get the best of both worlds, better flow during cold running and it stays viscous enough to do its job and doesn't break down under normal driving temps. mobil one will actually withstand higher temps with little breakdown as opposed to conventional oils, i wonder if this is why GM recomends to use mobil 1? because the LT engines run hot fromt he factory! oh well, thye workl great, 105k on mine and still going!

hope this helps,

chris

I find an advantage in 5W-30 start up flow properties. Don't think you can go wrong with either, unless it gets real cold - you would really want 5W-30, or even 0W-30. I use 5W-30.

Brands that meet 4718M are Mobil 1, Amsoil, Valvoline, Castrol Syntec, and I'm sure many others. I use all of the above except Syntec just because. Look for GM 4718M on the bottle.

Walmart has sales once in a while on 4 quart jugs of Mobil 1 for less then $20.00 and usually a Mobil 1 filter for under $8.00.

Good Luck,

Pete

Here in san jose CA it stays pretty warm, no really cold winters or anything. Ever since I have had the car, about 20,000 miles worth of oil changes every 3000 miles, 10w30 was used.

I kinda like the K&N filters, #2002 for a 87 if I remember correctly. They have a nut fashioned on the bottom of the can that a 1" socket fits on. Works pretty slick.

Its a good question...I change mine and get great satisfaction in knowing thats its been done correctly and that no one else messes up anything else on my vette...including grease marks all over he77...I use Mobil 1, 5w30 and AC PF52 filter... :seeya... and also the Chevrolet dealership charges at least $70 to do it and wastes my half day...and I do it for around $21...in about 30 min... :D
