Until I can get some hood time to find the real drain I'm disconnecting the battery on my '88 that I drive about once a week. I read in a recent article to buy an "ECM Bypass" lead that will allow the radio and ECM to retain their memory even if the battery is disconnected. It looks like this lead just jumps across the battery quick disconnect. It's just a fuse and wire so I can make it myself.
My question is if I attach that won't I still have the same drain problem? assuming the drain is not large enough to blow the in line fuse. I'm confused with the benefit?

Assuming the drain is not large enough to blow the in line fuse.

My vote is that the drain will still occur unless the fuse capacity is exceeded.
In my view, the benefit of these devices is that they provide a simple
level of anti-theft (anti-borrow). They permit sufficient power to retain
alarm useage, ECM and other settings as long as an unsophisticated party
does not try to start the car.
