Well, last summer I had a small leak at the thermostat housing. Replaced the o-ring since the old one was rock hard. Solved that leak.
Took the car out of storage this week and have driven it a few days and still see AF on the underside of the hood. When I got home today I popped the hood and with a drop light found another leak. It is at the very top of the water pump. Looks like the seal/gasket that goes between the body and the front cover is leaking. I could see it bubbling out there.
Question is, can I just buy a new gasket or use some sort of RTV and just reseal it or do I need to replace the entire pump?? Hate to pull off that cover and have all sorts of parts drop out on me Might be worth a shot before buying a new pump ??
If I do need a new pump, where is the best place to get one ??
I bought a water pump and an opti earlier this month from thepartsladi, excellent dealing. Quick service and great price on genuine GM.
"thepartsladi" are awesome! I buy almost exclusivly from them for my '93. You cannot beat their prices, and I have talked to them a few times on the phone. They stand behind what they sell, and will exchange/refund if you are not happy. Just look at their ebay ratings....nothing but praises....
Is thepartsladi the one who always gives a shout out to Jesus at the end of their ads? If so, go for it. I've purchased from them before and never got beat, either.
Well, went to the dealer last night. Turns out the parts department is able to get the o-ring ! Should be here today and only cost 5 bucks Based on how hard and brittle the T-stat seal was I am sure this one will be the same. Worth a shot vs spending $200 for the pump. See how it goes.
So how do you feel about replacing the cap, rotor, distributor, and water pump when the rear seal in the pump fails and it dribbles out of the weap hole and corrodes the guts out of the distributor components below??
Factory water pump only lasted 41k on my Vette. With that poor performance, come time to replace it, I was looking for the factory replacement. $125 for lifetime replacement at Advance Auto, 5 minutes from my house.

Is yours the vented Opti or the early unvented model?
I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk total Opti failure over a leaking water pump. If the gasket's failing can the entire pump be far behind? You've got to ask yourself.

Same here, I just changed mine out this winter as it had a weep from the weep hole. Milage on the 96 vert was 42,000.
