Id be tempted to go the same way myself. I pulled apart my water pump after i replaced it with a new one and ive gotta say the seals are still fine. So i have to wonder why the seals in the water pump in question here are going hard. I can only assume that it has had a poor maintainence shedule at some stage of its life, and/or using poor quality/incorrect mix ratio of coolant. Seems strange that the rear shaft seal would outlast the thermostat housing and front cover seals when the rear shaft seal is in contact with moving part/s. Not out of the question i spose, but id consider it rather abnormal....
