I am fixing to place a order with summitt and I was thinking about a new distributor. does replacing this really give you any advantage over the stock one???? I have a msd 6al box that I am going to put in my car, but I don't know about a distributor. what brands do you recommend and exactly what kind. As most of you know I am having problems trying to get my car to run after the cat work I did on it. All of my spark plugs are fouled, black and a little wet. I tried to clean them, but still nothing. they are ac delco with oreilly auto part brand plug wires and I am thinking about changing all of it out to see if my car will at least start?
The distributor will add no addition performance, nor will the 6AL box, but they will add new unknowns to the troubleshooting of your problems. Fix the car, get it running right, before you start making new changes.
With a stock type engine the change will not do you really any good. Now with a modified, high hp engine the distributor will give you a lot more tuning options and some hp simply because there are things that a factory distributor can not do that some of the after market ones can. Find out the cause of the problem and then buy parts; it will be cheaper. I would look at the A/F ratio and then the coil if that does not show any problems. Are you running the proper temperature spark plug? Could be you cause if you changed the plugs and the climate changed.
Don't throw money at parts w/o know whats the problem... If you don't have a FSM, you prob should get one, definately helps.
6al will add a new level of problems, and u don't need that now.. Fix the current issues... your stock is just fine
IMHO
When you have a problem, backing up is no disgrace. it's backtracking, sure, but return it to the way you found it, and if it runs good, determine what part of the mod went bad. If you gutted the cats, and it turned out bad, then you should go back over everything you touched. It could be a bad ground, or a loose wire, a dist. cap not properly seated, a bad o-ring anything. but only you went down that road, and only you can back up with any real success.
It looks like you installed new fuel injectors and TB, what else did you do? Are the fuel injectors bigger that stock? If so, that could be why your plugs are black. I am no expert here, but you could need a new chip burned.

Randy, larger injectors would require an AFR, not a new chip... but it does look like there are alot of changes done, so its difficult to track back...
