Hopefully someone will be along with a real answer soon. But I had a '73 Ford F250 that I was working on. There was a little tab under the dash that you had to push in to unlock the shaft.
Actually your 1st instinct was right:
-use a small flat-blade to depress the tang in the **** to remove the new kmob from the shaft and discard the new shaft
-use the same procedure to remove the stock **** from the saft in the vehicle
-slide the new know over the old shaft
-done
You can get a new **** and shaft from Corvette Central for around $20.00. Not sure if they sell just the ****, I bought both and put the new shaft in the box of spare parts for just in case.
Ecklers.com It's easier to just buy the reproduction **** from them. The part has been discontinued by GM. I'm fussy and didn't want a cheap chrome one that they sell at the parts store.
