I got the opti changed out (and water pump) on my '94 LT1, but the mechanic said it still felt sluggish to him and there was still some backfiring into the exhaust, which was a major problem before. He's going let the car sit over night then drive it "cold" and see if the problem is still real bad, as this is when the problem is most severe.
He said if it's still happening possible issues could be; burned valve, improper fireing of cylinders, or even a cam issue. He doesn't believe it's the catalytic convertor because the issue goes away almost entirely when the car warms up. He also doesn't feel it's a fuel delivery issue as that would be more unlikely to cause backfiring into the exhaust.
Any ideas?
Additional note: He said the water pump was definately leaking from the bottom and the opti had certainly seen better days considering the way it looked on the outside and inside.
Opti, water pump, O2 sensors, some vacuume lines, and the MAF. Got some new tires too.
He could only see that there was a problem via diagnostic when he slowed the reader down to 50 milliseconds for refresh. The MAF was the overall issue, but the other parts were on the fritz anyway.
It's nice being to accerate from a stop with confidence rather than having no power while I'm trying to not to get t-boned.
...it sounds to me like the mechanic was throwing parts at it, until he found the fix.
That's one way of looking at it. He did go through a lot of procedures to eliminate things such as bad cats, etc. I wonder if a dealer or any other mechanic would take the time to look at data from a variety of sets at a 50 millisecond refresh rate to see what was wrong. With no codes, there's only so much one can do.
If the opti was bad it would throw a code, and it was still backfiring after the replacement.
As long as you are happy with the results, that's what is important. I'm not trying to stir up chit. Just putting a thought in your head that you may want to find a new mechanic.
