Default Oil Temp guage inaccurate

My oil temp guage on my 93 dosn't move untill the oil reads approx 120F. When fully warm the oil reads 190 digitaly and on the guage only the first mark.
Is this the dash guage and does it mean I have to pull the guage cluster out? I would think the temp source would be the same for both read outs.

i have the same problem. i suspect that the connectors going into the cluster (not the ccm) are wearing out. some CF members have had luck with cleaning the connector contacts or jiggling the connector to move the contact point.

unfortunately this requires you to take out the cluster which requires you to remove the entire upper IP pad, which requires you to take off every vent and panel on the IP. however, this is something that can easily be done in an afternoon.

The anolog guage are not linear in relationship to the low and high value. Your digitial guage is more accurate.

you're right, but the gauge should still be near the middle tick under normal temps. incidentally mine stays at the first tick.

You're right the needle "should" be in the middle, but it is not...on my 96 or my previous 91.

true...true... :yesnod:

here's another sign that the cluster connector contact is going bad. the oil (and coolant) gauge read colder as the sensor's resistance increases. one thing that can happen with a bad connector is the resistance at the contact point increases (crap in the connector, deformed connector, whatever). result - a colder gauge.

but talk is cheap. i should check it out...
