Yeah...I have been trying to figure out how the resistor pellet would change value over time and go out of range. I have not heard of resistors doing this. Now if the resistor pellet contacts are dirty or worn, then I could understand how a spare key would work.
I would think a bit of alcohol and a Q-Tip on the resistor contacts and also the igniton switch contacts would be something to try first.
It also depends upon what is and is not coming on when attempting to start the car. It could be the VATS is fine, but the starter enable relay is not...or the fuel injector enable relay is not working. Or it could be that only part of the VATS is working. And it could be the ignition switch itself...a dirty contact or connector.
Ahhh the fun of troubleshooting a car's electrical systems....
