Default big brake brackets

I have a 96 vette that i am upgrading the front brakes on. I have the Grand Sport calipers and baer 13" 2 piece eradispeed rotors. my question is should i use the c4 big brake brackets (stock) or am i better off going with a (aftermarket) style for these caliper brackets?

part two of my qusetion is where is the best place for me to get these items "supplier" i am fairly new to the c4 parts.

Thanks in advance, Wally Dog

Since you have a '96 you already have the larger brake option, you would just bolt the new rotors on. I would guess it was cheaper to buy new painted calipers then paint the stock ones?

I did the same upgrade recently, expect on a 94 lt1 coupe. I purchased the 13" brackets from MAM and painted them easily myself. Since you already have the large brackets, just sand and paint with hi temp engine paint. The brackets don't get that hot.

Good luck!

I still need to purchase or come up with the bracket's for the 13" calipers/rotors. i have everything else except the big brake brackets so i was wondering if the the stock one will good enough for me or am i better off using aftermarket. also thanks again for your replies they are very helpful.

'96 already has the 13" J55 brakes on it from the factory....

Only difference between J55 calipers and GS calipers is the black paint and 'CORVETTE' lettering....

Not true. The Grand Sport caliper is much stronger than the regular j55..... much less caliper flex, better pad wear under extreme conditions such as autocross/roadrace. However the brackets are the same.

If you decide you would like to upgrade to the much stronger C5 caliper, we can set you up with a set of adapter brackets which will allow you to bolt on the c5 rotors, calipers and pads. I think you will find that the improvement is much better than the GS calipers you are thinking of installing. Many of our customers are using the c6 calipers with the larger corvette script on them as a bonus. Let me know if we can help you out. See the forsale section for our adapters.

This is true. If you have them side by side you can see the difference in the additional metal in the caliper. If I can find my pictures of this I will post them.

Above is the link showing the GS and J55 caliper. There are minor differences. I don't see how the GS caliper would be better, other then if you can't paint black.

Where did you purchase your Baer rotors and how much were they if you dont mind me asking? I have cross-drilled now, but they need to be replaced.

Thanks.

97Aggie,

I bought my Baer Eradispeed 2 piece drilled/slotted rotors at Scoggin-Dickey for $387 and i gave $200 for the Grand Sport caliper's new and still in the factory box some time back at a auction site.

My advice is to do a Google search or some other on-line search and compare prices to find your lowest price, most places will either meet or beat other's prices.

Thanks! I have the GS Calipers on my car. Put them on in the late 90s, but am now in need of changing out the cross drilled rotors that I currently have and wanted to go w/the eradispeed. Was that Scoggin-Dickey's normal price or was that something that they mathed for you?

97Aggie, you will have to go out and get some prices and then try to get them to beat the price they are pretty flexible and in my opinion a great place to deal with with there customer service.

Surely you are kidding.
But here is another shot.... Doug Rippie called them "more rigid" Maybe since Rippie said it, it will be more believeable. All I know is that the GS caliber does not flex like a j55 caliber and it ain't got nothing to do with the black paint or the Corvette logo.

Looking at the pics they look to be pretty much the same casting with the difference being the amount of machining done to them.I really don't thing GM would have invested the money in the design and tooling for a caliper just for the GS givin the limited number produced and with the C4 being at the end of it's production run.
