replacing the mast is easy, but be aware that if the ribbon cable has broken into two pieces inside the housing, sometimes the broken piece gets left behind when you pull out the mast. Then you have to remove the entire antenna to to try and get it out.
Tony: I believe you can buy a GM mast for about $20 or less from Chris at Superior Chevy. I would not go to the trouble of removing the motor assy (like scraft suggested) with a non GM part. I have not had good service on non-GM parts like the mast assy.
Well, mine has developed a quirk too. It'll go up but won't go down. I believe the cold, Indiana weather has taken its toll, so I'm looking at replacing the entire unit.
I had this problem a few years ago. I took out the entire motor assembly, easy to do, and found that my ribbon was broken. At that time, no one on the forum knew how to get the old ribbon still in the motor out. So I bought a new assembly. I followed Helms Service Manual instructions most of the way. I took off the rear wheel, removed the innner wheel well liner, and took out the outer rear light assembly so it was easy to get at. Time consuming, but not hard to do.
