Default [4+3] How to install shift ****/reverse lockout ring?

Well I am in the process of putting a new shift-boot in my '86, but I can't figure out how to reinstall the reverse lockout ring. From the pics you can see that it just rests inside the shaft, then I put the spring on top of it and screw the shiftknob on top of that.

Something must not be right though because it won't shift out of reverse. Scorp pointed out from the pic there doesn't seem to be enough room between the reverse lockout rod and the shift ****, but the lockout rod is down as far as it'll go.

Any ideas what I did wrong?

Should it shift into reverse without the shift ****/reverse lockout rod installed?

Looks like the problem is the reverse lock out rod. I wish I could remember how it's locked into the linkage below.

First thing, make sure it is NOT in reverse when you are putting the rod into the shifter. If you cannot move the shifter out of reverse with the rod removed then you need to adjust your linkage in the shift rods.

If you can get it out of reverse then install the reverse lockout rod and all should be fine. I'll post a pic (sorry cheap camera) that shows the rod in it's locked position.
Here ya go:

Well unfortunately it is in reverse right now while I'm trying to put the rod into the shifter, is that why I'm having this problem?

Will it come out of reverse if I force it, or must I adjust the linkage from underneath the car? I've never had to mess with the linkage before.

Boy that looks like Cr@9. I'm holding a shifter at 90 degrees. The shiny part is the bottom of the rod. Just above the rod in the pic you can see a "stop" . When you pull up on the **** to put it in reverse the shiny rod moves to the right and clears the "stop". Sorry it's so blurry.

Remove the shift **** and rod again before you force it out of reverse.

To answer your question in the first post. The rod prevents you from going into reverse. If it is removed you can put it in any gear but it makes it harder to find 1st and 2nd.

Diagram below if you need it to adjust the linkage. (easy job if you have a helper)

Problem solved! Centralcoaster suggested I stick the key in the ingnition and then try shifting out of reverse, sure enough it worked and then the reverse lockout switch fell right into position. Thanks everyone for the help, this forum is great.
