My 90 Auto has decided to start leaking while on jackstands. The car has not been driven for about 4 months and has been on jack stands for this time. I have not had previous leakng problems with it and was curious about possible reasons for the leak. It appears about a 6 ounces have leaked out.
If you just looked under the car you would think the rear end was leaking. That is what I first thought but it is definately tranny fluid. I am getting very close to finishing up the project that put the car on jackstands in the first place and need to know what to expect once I get her running again.
The jackstands are as high as they can go which puts the very front of the car about 2.5 feet above the floor. I have put the car up on these same jackstands before but this has never happened. I will say that I installed a transmission oil cooler since the last time it was on jackstands so maybe the "extra" trans fluid in the cooler is overflowing from some point I am not considering.
There is about 2 qts if fluid that sit above the centerline of the torque converter, above the front pump seal. Sometimes, if the front seal is weak, it will allow gravity to force the fluid past the lip of the seal. Then a siphoning effect takes place. If this is the case, starting the car every couple of weeks usually stops this from happening.
