New build engine. I just started it and let it idle for 40 min, fixing the fuel and the timing.
Now i drained the oil to put in new fresh one.
I noticed that on the bottom of the bucket ( the one I used to drain the oil in), I can se tiny aluminium colored "flakes". Its not big parts, or its not much, but when you tilt the bucket against the light you can spot it. Is that normal during the break-in?
I checked the rockers and the pushrods for wear, but all is fine there.
I also noticed "darker" areas in the oil, like "soot"/"carbon" in the oil. i guess thats normal, and perhaps could be from the super rich A/F i hade at the first startup?
its a hyd roller cam.
I will change the oil again after 100km to se if the "alu dust" decrease.
The machine shop should have hot-tanked and throughly washed off the block after any machining. New cam bearings needed machining after....but again, throughly washing the finished block should have removed any trace of metal fragments.
That being said......small aluminum and babbit fragments would never actually harm your start-up. I agree with cuisinartvette that it's ok. (in the long run)
Just remember to drive it like you stole it for the first few hundred miles.

Could it not be from the rings seating as well? I did some google search on the matter, and find that it could be from the rings seating against the new honed cylinderwalls?

I only idle the engine so far. To set the timing and the fuel. I hope the 40 min idle dident ruin my window to break it in hard. I did vary the rpm during this but no load ..
I imagine the ring and cylinder wear would never look like tiny 'flakes'. Probably more like some of the 'dark' particles in your oil. The rest would be carbon blow-by and general dirt from the assembly. Mostly carbon blow-by.
Anyways, personally I wouldn't worry. It's all quite normal, what you're seeing. Those cam oil passages are hard to clean perfectly....and the cam bearings are all soft metal. Just remember to replace your filter at the oil change!
No, I wouldn't worry too much about the idle time you've done so far......but spare no time in loading those rings!
Happy break-in.....and may the cops not catch you.
