Default EGR Tube flare type, fitting ring

I wrote a couple weeks ago about extending my 86's egr tube about 3 inches in length to clear the tall valve covers. So far, the copper tube is working OK. I would like to do something more permanent and am looking for another tube to use for parts. Anyway, to the topic at hand.

I tried compressing the ring using various pliers and wire cutters (front and side) without complete success -- there was an exhaust leak. The CF archives identified the tool required. I purchased it and am happy to say that in two minutes, all was fixed. Here are the details from the Grainger site. Note that the picture is misleading because it does not show the unique design elements. You need to see it from the top and side. It really did the trick.

Pincer,Side Jaw
Side Jaw Pincer, Forged Steel, Parallel Use
Grainger Item # 4E608
Price (ea.) $33.35
Brand OETIKER

Thanks for doing the research on this. I need to do the same thing on my '87. I'll put my order in to my Graingers account at work Monday morning.

I used the grainger tool and it suxed for me...used my mini bolt cutters and easily squashed the metal ring into place, just was careful not to cut through it.

I dont know what it was...for some reason the ring I bought was so tough the tool would not easily squash it down all the way,no matter what I did.

JUst wanted to pass along if you have another set of tools like a small bolt cutter or etc it might do the job as well.

Btw,I wanted to let some of you know, you can always upgrade that passenger side exhaust manifold and egr tube to the '90 unit.It bolts together, unlike a clamp and makes for easier removal to take off the VC or etc.

You can get them used and cheap from slavage yards, etc if you ever wanted to upgrade to that style.
