Default the eye inside the opti

my GS has developed a problem yesterday. it killed for no reason and wouldn't start. i checked for spark and there was none.
so i started checking every wire and connection and tracked it down to the long plug that goes into the top of the opti.
i'm running the Delteq ignition so the only part of the opti i still use is the little magnetic eye that the metal disc spins thru.
anyway when i push on the connector i can hear the fuel pump kick on and it starts up. but while running, if i touch or push or wiggle the top of the connector going into the top of the opti the motor kills.
the piece of wire that plugs into the opti from the side of the intake is @ 1 year old. i bought it new from GM. the opti and eye inside is old, at least 3 yrs old that i know of. so can i buy just the eye inside of the opti or do i have to buy the whole opti just to get the eye.
it has 2 part #s on it, 1629 in white and a mitsubishi symbol with j520 next to it. and says made in japan

laugh all you want, but the Mitsubishi sourced optical pickup is VERY reliable. Mitsu uses them on their cars and they simply don't fail.

I don't know if the eye is the problem. It sounds to me llike you need to get up with Dynaspark. Then again, I don't think anyone sells just the electronics for the opti. Dynaspark does offer the rebuild kits....

It sounds to me like a wiring issue. Either the harness has a bad contact or the opti has a bad receptical.

the inside of the connector on the eye is full of green corrosion. i'm going to clean it all out of there and sand the contacts down to shiny metal and see if that was the problem. i'm hoping thats all it was, a bad connection. i would rather to just put a new one in if i could.
thanks.

that's a great idea. I would check the connector and make sure it's weather pack isn't bad.

great! I just noticed you are in La. The harness is prone to this kinda corrosion. I have seen others with this problem.

I would spray some WD 40 or something of that nature on the harness to keep it dry.

Default How do you gain access

The engine compartment is so tight. How did you gain access to the plug on the opti spark to wiggle the connection while running. How did you get access to clean. I am in desperate need of doing this myself. My 4oth anniversary runs great and dies out of nowhere. I also have a delteq ignition. Please help.

Or consider packing the connector with dielectric grease to keep moisture at bay. You might also want to apply some RTV silicone to the connector backshell where the wires penetrate it, to seal it against moisture intrusion.

Be well,

You should be able to jostle the connector gently with a long probe of some sort (wood dowel, screwdriver, etc).

But, don't neglect to start at the beginning. Determine whether it's a fuel delivery fault, or an ignition fault, and troubleshoot it from there.

-To gain access to it, but not removing Opti, only need to remove WP.
-To remove Opti, remove WP, Balancer/Pully, Tensioner(optional)
