Use the right stuff, it's the best RTV there is.
Also, I dimpled the aluminum surface with a punch and hammer to help keep the RTV from squirting out. My factory sealant washed right out of there when I put synthetic in.
I have found that the bottom bolts bolts are the only ones that tend to leak.
I use the right stuff but I have found it doesn't realy matter.
The seal is so tight if you tq the bolts right they don't leak.
I have put my D44 with a spool through hell and it has never leaked.
You do need to tq the c-beam front to 49lbs and the rear to 59 lbs to make sure everything is secure.
I retq everything every 30 days and I have never broken a D 44.

The bolts don't leak, the RTV near the bolt holes is thin, and leaks across into the bolt hole. Once it gets here, it will drip out no matter how much RTV you goop onto the bolt.
