Default Heater core is out

Well I saved a lot of money this winter doing several projects myself! Having seen all the posts on the topic I took the cowards way out and scheduled to have it done at a local shop.

It hurts to pay BUT since I'm a tight fit in the cockpit as it is....judgement had to rule!!!

besides if it leaks I can take it back!!

It is because of the good information shared here that we can make these decisions

I really don't blame you for sending it out. I made the mistake of not testing the after market core and it leaked. I made the mistake of using an after market when I was advised to use a Delco. Oh well anyway I am a vet of the heater core battle x2. Frankly if I had a problem with the second one I was going to bypass it LOL.

I started to try it myself and just do a by pass BUT if you go that far....well might as well try and have it function. I weigh 220 and that was going to present an additional problem to an already tough job!

It should be ready tomorrow or Thursday.

Now I need to find a bunch of other things to do myself to "earn" the next big job!!

In 10 years of ownership, I've tackled nearly everything the C4 Corvette can throw my way.....except for a heater core. Knock on wood, my 23 year old heater core still works just fine.

From what I understand....GM took a heater core and built a car around it. I'm too lazy to do a search...has anyone ever done a tech article with pics on this?

It's not that bad, its good therapy too and you get to tweak other things while there. I added some foam tape to everything that I thought would rattle.

When I did the core in my "new" '88 IROC-Z last summer I sealed up all the HVAC ducting and "isolated" a lot of plastic-to-plastic stuff to eliminate squeaks & rattles.

In the IROC-Z it wasn't really cramped but I might pull the passenger seat & rail if doing the Vette, not sure till I have to do it though.

If you have big hands or a big body, taking it to a shop is the way to go.
I don't have big hands or a big body, so I was forced to do it myself.

I bet it would be a little easier with the seat removed? that would free up a whole lot of room.
