I just picked up a '93 coupe with auto trans three weeks ago. It has 47k miles on it and except for the stereo head unit appears completely stock. I've put almost 1000 miles on it and she appears to be without gremlins so far.
That being said, I was driving it home the other nite and the main road to the house is a 45 mph ride. The tranny had shifted into OD so the RPMs were very low. I decided to bump the shifter down one more notch to defeat the OD. Everything seemed the same until I got into the subdivision and started hitting stop signs. Every shift from 2nd to 1st hit much harder than I was accustomed to and actually made a bump almost as if my universals were shot. Taking it nice and slow thru the subdivision the 1st to 2nd shifts also hit much harder. I put the shifter back into the drive w/OD position and the shifts went soft again with no noise. I never thought the two shift positions would have made any difference other than shutting down OD, but it looks like it does.
Has anybody ever seen this before? Is this normal or has somebody reprogrammed my ECU? I'd have to think that if my non-OD shift pattern is more aggressive, that's what I'll be using during playtime.
Bump for reconsideration....lots of views but no ideas yet. Anybody know about the program on automatics?
The 93 cars have an old school non electronic trans. The ecm does nothing except lock the torque converter. All shift fimness and shift point mods must be done mechanically, inside the trans.
