There is no cotter pin, but there is "wedge" pressed down into the shifter handle that needs to be taken out before you can unscrew the ****.

1. Gently pry out the gear pattern indicator from top of ****.
2. Now you will see a wedge with very little of the top exposed.

The easiest way to get this wedge out, is to use a small pair of vice grips and lock them on the top of the wedge. Now use a hammer or something so that you can pound up on the vice grips. You won't be able to wiggle or pull the vice grips up. The wedge is just in there too tight. Once you get it out, the shifter **** will then unscrew like any other ****.

You will also notice the wedge is like a "T" shape, and will only go back in one way.

sometimes the wedge just gets stuck. when you put it back together don't pound it in. its just there to keep the **** from turning.

Just a thought as that wedge can be a bear to move. I used a 6" std vise grip and when I closed & locked them I noticed I could slide a screw driver, a thin shafted one, thru the back part of the jaws. I did just that and used the shaft to wack with the hammer and that set up poped out the wedge very easily.

I first did the roof panel thing and stood & tried yanking but that was futile!:o

My wedge was in really tight. It is easier to take the top off to be able to position yourself to pull on it. I had to use a couple pair of vise grips and hammer it out. It really isn't needed imo.
