Default ZF Transmission issue

What does it mean when you get a whining sound when the tranny is in neutral but goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed? ive been told the noise is intermittent.

Is this the pilot bushing going out?

I bet it's the throw out bearing.

Usually it just means that you have a ZF transmission. I take it this isn't your car.

Does it only happen when the tranny is up to temp?

A bad throwout bearing on these will tend to make noise all the time since it's always rotating with the motor. The noise could get better or worse as you push the clutch in and load up the bearing, but I don't see how it'd ever be intermittent.

My Z06 had a bad throw out bearing and it did it intermittently. Usually when it warmed up after 15 minutes on the road. Luckily it was covered by the warranty. I'm not trying to be disrespectful, just trying to help.

4+3 started doing this, I dropped the whole thing and put it back together two nights after work. I rushed...I only replaced the pilot bushing. Its still there, its the throwout bearing...

If this noise wasn't there before and now it is, it is the throwout bearing.

ZF and 4+3 throwout bearing are quite different. ZF bearing is attached to pressure plate and always spins.

ZF rattles in neutral, that's just how it is.

Yes its not my car.

Not really sure. First time i was in the car I didn't notice it second time I did. It did it at startup and after the drive last nite.

but I don't see how it'd ever be intermittent.
Just going by what I was told. Ive had a couple 4+3 cars but no experience with a ZF.

Im guessing by the replies its normal and nothing to worry about.

That's right. The ZF is even worse if you have a single mass, alum. FW like I do; I have a new ZF, new clutch pressure plate, etc. and mine (with the clutch disengaged in neutral) rattles extremely loud at low RPM (idle); not to worry; did the same thing with the other ZF (black tag) I had

Doesn't sound like a throwout bearing.
Doesn't sound like a pilot bushing.
Does sound like a gearbox thing.

Whether it's normal or not depends on the noise.

I guess I'm lucky, my ZF6 1989 black tag doesn't whir loudly or rattle hot or cold in nuetral with the clutch out. Things that make you go....... Hmmmm?

Hmmmmm. Throwout bearings only come into play when the pedal is depressed....so a bad one would only make noise when the pedal is pushed in.....if the pedal is not depressed the throwout bearing just sits there doing nothing.
Maybe there's a cat caught in the clutch, and when the owner presses on the clutch pedal it chokes the cat?

It would have to be a rattle-snake caught in there.

True for most cars. But on the ZF clutch, the throwout bearing always spins. It is clipped to the pressure plate on one end, and clipped to the clutch fork on the other. Although it won't be loaded up.
