Default Knock Sensor Shield Pics??

My service manual shows a metal shield near the knock sensor called "ESC Sensor Shield." I am working to reduce my amount of knock counts and realize my car does not have this part. Can somebody snap a pic of this thing and let me know if it is really necessary?

My pics are on my old computer, but I see no real need for it.

It would not cause false nknocks, it is a sheet metal cover that protects the knock sensor should something fly up under the car.

False knocks are generally from a header or exhaust bumping the frame..

Generally there are two things that can help... if you are running a Lt-1 you can swap to the LT-4 knock module, or you may need to pull a little timing if you are programming...

If you need more specific advice pllease feel free to PM me i'll be happy to help...

I have an L98. I have been thinking about upgrading my ESC module per Gordon Kilbrew here on Jims site: http://www.geocities.com/jgkov/ECSMod.html
When my chip was burned I chose to have the tuner desensitize my knock sensor, but from looking at my programming it looks as though the only options for that are to change the amount of timing able to be pulled and the attack / recovery rate of ecm once knock is detected. Do you think this module in combination with my chip would be too insensitive to knock? I'd hate to keep the ecm from preventing true knock. The timing is set at the base timing of 6*btdc.

You could always use the "olde tyme" method and wait to hear knocking. The absents of the shield should not cause or exaggerate knock counts. If it were there, and improperly installed where it could hit, or be hit, by something else, it could actually contribute to a false knock problem.

RACE ON!!!

The only value I see that shield having is to divert the coolant to a better place to catch it , when your pulling the sensor

It also serves to reduce engine heat around and keep, grease, oil and grime off the plastic sensor connector and wires. They can throw a false code if they get caked with grime, oil and other contaminants.

Sounds like I might need to install a pair of these on my new motor.

Here's a pic of the KS with the shield removed. It's metal and located above the sensor, held in place by two 10 mm. nuts.
