Default Fan Question

I have an 85 coupe and was wondering what the normal operating temp is for this engine. I have just driven around town as I just got it and am working out some issues. The temp has gotten up to 210 and the phane has not come on. I know the fan works because when I was setting the idle and jumped the diagnostic connector it came on. I'm wondering if the temp sensor is bad. Any suggestions? how would I test the temp sensor. Also no codes or check engine light.

At 210, the fan shouldn't come on. I think 225-229 is the temp it kicks on at.

My 85 runs at 180 down the road, 190's in town, and about 210 at a traffic light.

I should probably clean out the front of the radiator, been awhile since I've done that.

Your main fan should come on at 228 F and if you have the auxilliary fan, it should come on at 238 F. Neither of these temperatures will do any harm to your engine , just your comfort level. GM says to shut the engine off at 255 F and let it cool down. I have never seen 260 F in my 87. The 210 you see at a stoplight is pretty normal, and when you get underway, the temperature should drop back to close to the opening temperature of your thermostat, that is, if you have the stock stat which is 195 F.
