Default Maintenance...

I have a bone stock 87 with 33,000 miles on it. 4+3.

I have never had the rad / or tranny / diff fluid changed... What should I use? Redline ,or stick with stock GM fluids?

the motor is starting hard right now, I have been diligent about oil changes and have changed the plugs a few times , other than normal filter changes haven't done much to the car since I bought it new. Starts Esp hard when hot.

It's throwing a check engine light , I just want to get the car back up to snuff for my weekend crusier

Thanks!

I would focus on the cooling system / radiator first and formost. Are you the original owner? Take the radiator out and have it thououghly cleaned inside and out. Then check to ensure fans / fan is operating properly, and install a new thermostat I believe 195* is stock. Redline / Mobil 1 and both good products, have used both now just Mobil 1. Then start on the trans.

Hope this helps

WOW, 33,000 miles! Lucky dog When I got my 86 it was pretty neglected on up-keep and it started hard also, I did some general tune-up stuff and it runs great.

You say plugs are new, but things like plug wires, distributor cap & rotor, and fuel filter are still 20 years old. I also cleaned the throttle body. For about $100 and a Saturday's time I bet you would have her purring like a kitten again

I would change all fluids, they can't be in good shape. Don't use synthetic unless you have been using it all along. Valvoline and others make fluids for high milage cars. Even though you have low miles, your seals could use the conditioners in those products. Change all fluids and flush and refill cooling system and you should be good to go.

Default Tune-up Specs...

Here is a basic tune-up specification sheet that I have used for years. It will be a basic guide for your tune-up work.
