I have a ticking sound coming from my rear tires. It is very noticable when I take off from a stop in either first or reverse. It has been happening for over a year but has become substantially louder. What is the cause of this? And if it isn't taken care of immediately could it cause more serious, more expensive problems in the near future?
When I had a "ticking" in the right rear it was due to a bad U-joint in the RR half-shaft.
Jack the rear, pull the wheels and rotate the rotor while watching the half-shaft. If you see any motion of the half-shaft but none at the spline into the diff, you have found the bad U-joint.
The louder it gets the more parts are worn and greater chance of failure.
Check your U joints for play. If they are in good shape, it may be from dry/rusty/worn splines from halfshaft to bearing unit. You can take it apart and lube the splines, replace the washer and torque the axel nut to the 180lb area.
You may get away with just re-torquing the axel nut. I have mine at 200lbs.
A bad half shaft ujoint will make a sqeaking noise while you driving as well a ticking noise when you start off. Driving the car close to a retaining wall will reflect noise back to you depending on which side has the defective ujoint. I got a bad ujoint on my 93 now. Trying to take care of another problem before I make that repair. BTW, replace both ujoints when you have the half shaft out of the car. Ujoints are cheap. Removing the half shaft is hard work.

Don't skimp get the Spicer (Dana) U-Joints, they cost a little more, but there made in the USA and there the strongest out there.
That ticking could also be the infamous Teflon coated washer.
If all you get is clicking when you put the car in gear it could be the axle splines. This happened to my 1 year old 1996. The axle splines get rusty. The dealer pulled the hubs, cleaned the axle splines and coated them with anti-seize compound. I was skeptical, but it worked!
