I got my 85 out for the first time in 2 years and after I replaced the battery everything seemed fine until I tried the A/C. The A/C clutch is engaging and disengaging every 5 seconds or so. Very rythmic and it does not matter where I set the thermostat it still does it.
Exactly, where are you located, here in Louisiana the old stuff, I think R-12 is available but very $$$$. But I would spend the money, I heard of people switch to the new freon and their system is not as cold. Good luck man.
It's 3 Bucks a can in Mexico, but getting back across the Border these days is ridiculous and getting caught is a pretty steep fine (like 25 Grand). Expect to pay $35 a can at most parts stores and you'll need an EPA license which you can get at http://www.epatest.com for $25 or so (I forget the price). You also need a decent manifold gauge set. A good one will run around $75. So, to recharge (assuming you might need as many as two cans), count on spending $170. If you can find a shop to do it for less, you may be better off. Unfortunately, they are going to leak test your system and if it's leaking, they are going tell you it has to be fixed (more $$'s) before the Law will allow them to put any back in. All systems leak, especially if they sit, so you may want to spend the $'s and do this yourself. Just be careful and be sure to charge to the correct pressure based on air temp at the condensor. The shop manual has the numbers. If you try to cram more into the system then it can reasonably hold, you can blow it up - not a pretty sight. As to converting to R134, and I don't want to start a raging debate, I don't think you will ever get the performance you will see with R12, so I recommend you stick with you got.
