Default Waterpump

Since I think my water pump or gasket is leaking fluid (spitting more like it) I am going to swap them both.

I was looking in my summit catalog and they have small chevy listed twice, once with short and one with long...which version does an 89 Auto need?

What gasket? You might make sure you need a water pump before you spend the money for nothing.

All C4s with the Gen I engine use a SHORT water pump with the reverse (CCW) rotation.

RACE ON!!!

I just ordered a new flowkooler today. Our L98s use the short style...

How do they designate the reverse flow?

I went to RockAuto and found they have some A-1 Cardone units that look decent. One is a normal pump and one labled heavy duty so I am going to give the heavy duty unit a try.

MorpheusGPR: I agree with CFI-EFI in that you need to make sure the water pump is the problem. Many times the hose clamp will loosen with age and a leak developes. A few turn with a screwdriver may solve your problem. If you do decide you need a water pump, I have a used on in the basement and it had 35,000 miles when I change it out about four years ago. Why did I change it out? I repainted parts on my engine and the water pump was an easy change out during the painting process. As for the pump, a friend gave me a brand new GM unit

I will take $20 plus shipping for the used pump if you are interested and it does not have a warranty.

Default water pumps

be careful when buying pumps.
1. there is a short pump with a 5/8" shaft snout w/normal rotation
2. there is a long water pump with a 5/8" shaft snout w/normal rotation.
3. there is the early corvette pump that is longer than a short pump by 3/64" with a 1/2" shaft snout
4. there is the one we use that has the same length, but is reverse rotation and has 1/2" snout.
Do not buy a short early pump, the impeller will rotate the wrong way, and your car will overheat quickly.
The correct one is about $109 At CHECKER, and the edelbrock unit is about $178
just be careful is all i'm sayin

When looking at the pump how do you tell what direction it will rotate and flow?

I will dig around and see if I can tell anything with the clamp.

Look at the impeller, it will push water in only one direction.
