I have a late 86 corvette with auto tranny. I just rebuilt the motor and then 3 thousand mile late the tranny went out! Third slips very bad and overdrive is complitely gone! I did beef up the car a little bit... The car has 212XXX miles on it! Was it an extra ponnies that made the tranny go or do you guy/gals think it was do to wear??? How much horsepower can the stock tranny handle?

212,000 miles on an origional trans is exceptional. They usually die of old age exactly as you describe. 3-4 clutch pack is normally the first to fail. There are many proven recipes for rebuilding and upgrading a 700r4. Consult your rebuilder and seek his advise. You can easily and somewhat inexpensively build them to hold 450 hp and 450 ft lbs.

Listen to this guy, he knows his chit, ask him real nice and see if he'll build you a trans.
Hell i've done mine three times in 178k miles! Hopefully this last super build (that peteK helped steer me in the right direction) will last 212k miles!!
I had a similar problem and it was a bad TV cable, plus high heat making varnish in the valve body. Drop the pan and see what is in there. I found it free of metal so dropped the valve body and found debris in it. All it cost was a TV cable (it would not adjust) and some ATF. I did put a shift kit while I was there.
Hey thanks alot for the input! I got it fixed already! It was rebuilt with set of heavy dutie clutches... I like it!
Hey,

Pete K, was very nice and gave soem info about trans.
Tell me what kind of heavy duty kit you used? And where did you get it?
Thanks
