Knock Sensor Question @@ (long)
87 L98 355, flat tops, 222/232@.050 cam with .501 lift, 2.02 valves...
Well, already changed the fuel pump (actually the whole gas tank and the fuel sending unit). has LT1 fuel injectors, New IAC, TPS at .45v, new distributor internals... and the list goes on... (LT1 exhaust, K&N, descreened MAF, new spark plugs...)
Well, here is my new delimma: I cant get the timing to be set. the idle is still terrible!!! well, today looking at the books, light goes off- I dont remember having a knock sensor at all!!!!!!!!
Now my question, can it be that I would have never be able to set the timing and the idle if I dont have the knock sensor? or is it my next problem- Reprogrammed Chip???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry again for all these awkward questions, I am new to the TPI world. I had built my 76 L48, played with many LT1s and LS1s, but never in these detail.
BTW I am going to install the knock sensor tomorrow or day after, it got too late today...
Another off-subject question, 87 did have the distributor with a coil on top, right? I keep seeing some pics and MSD websites with 8633, which looks way different.
Your '87 has two elements in the knock detection circuit:
-the knock sensor in the block below #6 & #8 spark plugs
-the ESC module located near the rear of the RH inner fender well
If the '87 is your Vette I strongly suggest you pick up a copy of the FSM by HELM. For a quick but thorough over view of TPI try "Chevy TPI Fuel Injection Swapper's Guide" by John Baechtel, available from Summit (~$15) or Amazon.
