Default Differenece between MSD 6 / 7 Series Ignition

Does anyone know whether the 7 series puts out a greater spark than the 6A? What about the Digital 6? I am about to order a new coil (MSD 8253), and it seems to be specific to the 6A ignition units.

I am currently running an MSD 6AL and Blaster II (vintage '93). I am preparing to begin to track down a "spark snuff" issue, and this was the first parts I had planned to replace.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

6AL ...

Spark Energy: 105-115 milliJoules Per Spark
Primary Voltage: 460-480 Volts
Secondary Voltage: 45,000 Volts (Blaster Coil)
Current Requirements: 5 Amps-5,000 RPM / 10 Amps-10,000 RPM
RPM Range: 15,000 RPM with 14.4 Volts
Spark Duration: 20° Crankshaft Rotation

Digital 6 Plus....

Spark Energy: 135 milliJoules per spark
Primary Voltage: 535 Volts delivered to coil
Secondary Voltage: 45,000 Volts (MSD HVC Coil)
Current Draw: 0.7 amp per 1,000 rpm (7.2 amp) with 14V bat.@ 10,000 rpm
RPM Range: 12,500 rpm with 14.4 volt supply
Spark Duration: 20° crankshaft rotation thru 3,300 rpm

Digital 7 plus....

Spark Energy: 190 MilliJoules Per Spark
Primary Voltage: 535 Volts
Output Voltage: 40,000 Volts
Current Draw: 1.1 Amp per 1,000 rpm
RPM Range: 12,500 rpm with 14.4 Volt Supply
Spark Duration: Not Listed

I run a Digital 6+ with an 8225 Coil, and a low resistance HEI bushing.

Scorp,
Are the connections basically the same for a Digital 6 vs the 6AL. Does it also keep the rev limiter as the 6AL?

My real concern is buying the MSD 8253 and then finding out that the Blaster II coil was not the issue, then having to buy the spark box and finding that the new box is not compatible with the 8253.

Thanks for providing the specs.

I don't know about the connection differences, but they must be rather similar. I use an adapter harness that plugs right into the Vette's HEI system. The Digi 6+ has 2 rev limiters, one that is set all the time, and another you can set by supplying 12v to another lead on the box. You could use it for launching or nitrous. I don't know how the AL works, but the Digi 6+ has the soft touch rev limiter where it disables the spark to every other cylinder.

This helpful? 4th column from the right is the 8253.

Awesome info. And just as suspected, most coils that are compatible with the 6 series ignitions are non-compatible with the 7 series ignitions. But, It looks like all of the 6AL compatible coils are also compatible with the Digi-6.

I was recommended the MSD 8253 by MSD when describing my issues. I was trying to purchase the least expensive item first for troubleshooting purposes. I wonder if the 7 series pieces wreak havoc on your in-car electronics? It seems that the 7 series components are typically used in "full-out" racecars.

Thanks again for the in-depth detail on your post.
