I just got my car back from the shop where they were rewiring the wires from the batter to the distributor which had fried. Anyway, I'm driving around about an hour later and gun it to see if its still pinging, which it is, so I back off. My guage switches over from oil temp to oil pressure and kindly alerts me to the fact that it has dropped to 7 then 4 then 0. I quickly kill the engine. Everything appears normal so I start it back up. Sounds fine. On the way home, whenever I brake hard, accelerate hard, or take a turn at more than 10 mph, the oil pressure reading drops to 0 then bounces back up. I am obviously afraid to drive the car now. Do you think this could just be a screwed up reading caused by the wiring work or is it really the engine?
The fact that it goes to zero when you brake or turn, etc. could mean that it is a wiring problem, but it could also mean that the oil is washing away from the oil pick-up. I assume you have checked the oil level? The only other reason could be a pick-up that has come off of the pump (if you don't find any problems in the wiring, it is time to drop the pan!).
Either way, I would not be running it without oil pressure.
I would suggest you back up and cover the basics first. Engine oil in good condition and at the proper level? Using a quality oil filter? Is the engine making odd sounds? Have you confirmed the correct oil pressure with a known good MECHANICAL gauge? Have you driven the car with the mechanical gauge attached? Just my 2 cents.
