I'm looking at a possible engine rebuild. Worn rings / possibly a fractured piston. Those details are really not relevant to my question though.
Simply, is it possible to just drop the pan, pull the rotating assembly from the bottom and replace the pistons + rings, run a hone up, throw it back together and call it a day?
I'm on a pretty strict budget and already dedicate my time to other projects. There isn't really any terrible mechanical failure and would prefer not to pull the entire engine for a complete overhaul.
You can not just drop the pan and remove the rotating assembly. Timing chain. You can drop the pan, remove the intake and heads and do it that way. Might be good for a short term repair.
I did it that way once on a 302 ford thunderbid. Never again!
Took twice as long and was twice as hard as removing the shortblock from the framerails. Live and learn.
