!!! Valve cover question !!!
Do I need to remove the AC bracket on the passenger's side to remove the valve cover so that I can get to the bottom most bolts on the intake runners?
The book says to pull the alternator bracket to get to the driver's side though. I used one of the tech tips above instead which I'll post:
"I noticed the cover for the wiper motor at the firewall and with just 3 screws to remove I had the the wiper motor cover off and enough room once I pulled off the plug wires at the plugs to move the cover back toward the firewall and off the head. By doing so I managed to clear the alternator mounts at the front and with a lot less hassle than removing the alternator."
The links on the red bar above has some pretty useful information if you haven't checked it out yet.
Following the 89 service manual, I removed the AC compressor from it's mounting bolts and moved it out of the way, but I can't seem to pull the cover far enough UP to clear cylinder #2's rockers. That frelling bracket is in the way. (IIRC you've gotta remove durn near EVERYTHING off the front to get that bracket off too...grrrr)
* = actually, just clean enough to run for two months...til the new motor's ready...then the old motor will sit til I rebuild it.
I always remove all extra items out of the way.
Take your time and work slowly for best results.

Everyone else: I got the manifold out and everything cleaned up, will attack the project again after I heal.

I don't know if the location of all the gizmos on your 89 are the same as my 91 but here is what I did. I got so tired of trying to get the valve cover off the passenger side that I finally used my Dremel tool and notched the AC bracket. Took about three extra minutes and now if I need to get off the valve cover it is a whole (hole :) ) lot easier.

Jeffie: >goofy far off look< Yeah, I guess I does! It was actually because the car looks like a sled with the top down, but it also went and stopped fast. (The rocket sled from the 60's space program is still the fastest accelerating and decelerating 'vehicle' designed by man...http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/trek/4wd/crash.htm) When I'd had the car for a while, I realised it really didn't live up to it's moniker...hence the 383 buildup in progress :smash:
This brings up another clueless newbie question: How do you set the valve lash with all this crap in the way? Disassemble, remove valvecover, reassemble, adjust one side, disassemble, remove/replace covers, reassemble, adjust, disassemble, replace valve cover? Um :bs !
