Hi guys, I am doing a 421 miniram motor for a guy in Europe, and need a part number for a Stant thermostat. Some thermostats won't open all the way, and there is one specific that works perfect, but I can't remember the number. TPIS has a part number for a 170 degree AC Delco thermostat. But I am looking for a 160 Stant.
Thanks.

Ok, enough is enough - I found a felpro gasket - I believe it is a 2202 - it is 1/8th thick and it isnt cheap - put the gasket on the manifold and set the tstat on top of the gasket - use no sealant.
The stat on the MiniRam in my 415 CID 86 did the same thing, bottomed out and stuck in the open position. Fortunately I'd used a stat that fails in the open position.
The best thing would be to contact TPIS and get the stat or the correct part number. I never did for mine because my 86 was wrecked by an 18 wheeler a few days after I installed the MiniRam.
Be sure to post the part number so we can all benefit.
I already contacted TPIS, and they only have a AC Delco part number for a 170 degree thermostat. I am looking for a Stant 160. I have one in my car, but was hoping I wouldn't have to take it out to get a part number.
is the thermostat bottoming out, and not opening far enough, been a common cause for overheating with the Minirams?
Apparently some have, I beleive it may because of the earlier version (MR I from pics. I have seen). When I first put mine together I did some measuring and it is real close, however the stat works properly on mine.
I spoke to Chris at TPIS today and found out two things.
1) The "older" manifolds will have a ridge machined into them for the thermostat. These take the 'shallow' thermostat, that he said was no longer available. He said drill some holes in the thermostat.. The newer manifolds run the thermostat in the water neck.

that confirms my original observation, but I think there is just less room on the earlier MR, measuring from the top edge of the intake to inside bottom. I say this because when I first set it up I had done some measuring (MR II). Having the pellet extended, w/no gasket, it was close (had approx. 1/8" room to spare, if memory serves).
The funny thing is I initially set it up with the stat in the neck (where the maching is done, and as intended) and it leaked even with sealant smeared on both sides of the gasket. I then put the stat. straight on the intake w/gasket above and has been that way since and works well.
The only other answer I could think of is, all of these castings should be checked, and no 2 are alike ...

You're welcome, if the one you are bulding for that party is anything like yours it should be a screamer !
