Default PKE receiver location

Got a 96 several weeks ago and the remotes don't work, previous owner had it in the garage and they diagnosed the receiver as bad. He bought a new one and I need to put it in. I ordered a manual on ebay and unfortunately discovered the preliminary manual does not have any information on this. Where is it and how hard is it to get to? I will try the reprogramming after disconnecting battery. If that fails, into the dash I go....but where and how? Thanks

Not sure but I think it might be in the rear view mirror.

Default In da dash

It's behind the dash. I replaced the PKE module in my '94 shortly after I bought it a couple years ago. You have to remove the shifter console cover, the dash face, and the dash board. My Heims shop manual had the diagrams. I actually didn't remove the dashboard completely, I removed enough screws/bolts to allow me to get my arms up to the elbow under it to access the module. Not a short job!

The top dash pad has to be removed. To accomplish this, the center console trim has to be removed, right side kick paned and associated nuts, AC vents, fuse box cover and screws, defroster vent and an assortment of other screws that hold pad down. Then you lift up and pull it back and remove the pad. The air bag fuses need to be removed also. This is just a very basic run down of the procedure.

Once pad is off, in the center, the chime box has to be removed first which is Velcroed on to the PKE. Then you can get to the PKE which just snaps in. All connector plugs have to be removed also. To get enough clearance to actually pull it out, I like to remove the screws for the AC vent above it so I can lift the vent up slightly for added clearance.

Getting a Helms manual would be a great help. Looking at it for a good while would be good to. Everything comes apart in an order, don’t pull aggressively on plastic parts, they are fragile due to its age.

Rats. I was hoping this would be an easier project. I have ordered the Helms manuals already. When I discovered the Preliminary manual I bought went to section 9j and this subject is covered in 9k I threw in the towel and ordered the new ones. Oh yeah, the mirror is where I looked first........
Thanks for the info guys. Very appreciated but in the future can you make the jobs easier??..LOL
