I just changed all rotors and and pads on 89 C4. The rear pads on both sides are not making full contact with the full width of the pad. The pads are contacting the rotor more on the outside of the rotor. I have replaced the pads on the rear before and had the same problem. Could this be from the wear on the caliper itself? (Wheel brearings?) Both of them have been replaced in last few years. I cleaned the slide pins and applied never seize to them. The mileage is about 120000.
I once had a 93 Grand Prix and there was a recall on the rear brake caliper because of sticking problems.
There is also a thick pad and a thinner pad for the rear.
I think the thicker pad will only fit one way because of wear indicator sticking out.
Any ideas of suggestions? These are pads and slotted/drilled rotors from Brakedesign in Ca.
The inner and outer pads are different. The inner one has a small protrusion on the backing plate. If you put the pads in A-- backwards, the protrusion will prevent the pad face from being parallel to the rotor AND will display a minimal contact patch on the outer face. Pull the wheels and check the pads, no need to push the piston back or bleed. I think the protrusion is supposed to index the inner pad. I road race my 94 LT1 and change pads very frequently; I have grinded the protrusion off and used the inner pad on the outer location with no problem.
It is normal for the pad to cover only a portion of the rear rotor. That’s the design, as weird as it seems.
That’s why the rear brakes are not great and the emergency brake works poorly if actually trying to stop the car with it. It makes you wonder what the thought was behind the engineering.
