I did a lot of flying this weekend and i was wondering who would win everytime i took off. the distance from when the plane starts the take off till its wheels are off the ground.
Plane will go faster.. (mph) ... vette will be quicker... seconds. 737 takes 15seconds to go 124mph, vette can take 12 seconds to go around 115 or so. 3 more seconds with a vette and you're definitely over 124mph. Course a plane has tons of horse power... so it will accelerate over 124mph (200kmph) pretty fast..
But if you drag race the 737 against a Vette, does the Vette line up with the nose wheel?
I think Hot Rod Magazine did an article where they "raced" a top fuel dragster against an F/A-18 on a catapult.
I bet the top fuel dragsters were pretty close with those F18's ... top fuel doing a 1/4 mile in 5 seconds is probably as fast or faster than an F18 on the ground.. now.. if you add the fact that lots of those planes take off from carriers which have steam launching systems.. then maybe the F18 would beat it :jester
I live very close to one of the busiest private airports in the country, Addison Airport. every now and then a military jet takes off, and because its in the middle of the city its gets quite a few spectators and most pilots know this, what they normally do is to run almost the entire lenght of the run way then pull up....straight up what a sight the whole thing from the moment of take off to the point you can't see or hear it any more is probably around 10 sec. now thats

Hmmm, I wonder how they stopped the dragster - or did it go for a swim off the end of the aircraft carrier? :jester
If I'm not mistaken the Swamp Rat won too! As far as stopping, if I remember correctly, the deck is a lot more than a 1/4 mile, the car popped the chutes and I believe may have been rigged to catch a cable if necessary.
Oh, and this was a 1/4 mile race only. Heck, I remember reading the Cyclone pickup out running a Ferrari in the 1/4, but the Ferrari blew by it a couple of feet later!
I remember that article - they had an amazing photo of the Top Fuel dragster with flames coming out of the pipes, sitting right next to an F18 with one engine in full afterburner on the flight deck. The author said the sound of one jet engine totally drowned out the V8 at 7000 RPM. They only lit up one engine to keep the plane from overheating.
You would think a car would pull harder, and I don't remember the numbers, but the sheer G-force of the F18 accelleration with catapault was something like twice what the the dragster was capable of. The catapult is only 262 feet long and launches an F18 at 170 MPH, so it does a lot in a hurry!
And it was only a static display of power - the dragster and fighter did NOT move on the aircraft carrier!
I drove out to Lake Havasu weekend before last on the I40. I went 145 for a couple of minutes before I came up on some cars, THAT was fun. Could've gone faster, but the 700R4 started acting up and wouldn't stay in overdrive at WOT. Stock '88 with 3.45 rear.
