It is my understanding that there is a door in the system that opens and closes to change which vents the air comes out of. My air blows cold, but I'm getting next to no velocity when it comes out of the vents. So I'm led to believe that there is a problem with this door. My question is, where is it and how hard is it to get to. And--- when I get to it, what should I be looking at.
Car is an '86 Roadster, Manual Climate Control.
Generally it wouldn't really bother me, but I'm planning on taking the car on a roadtrip or two this summer and need the A/C to work properly.
I don't know about the manual control but on my auto, I can sometimes here the door closing (or opening). It is under the passenger side on my 90. BTW, nice avitar
I really don't hear anything when I move the lever. When it's on A/C or heat, it comes out both the dash vents and the lower vents, like it's on Bi-Level all the time. It makes me wonder if theres something thats not connected to the back of the control panel. But the fan kicks on under A/C like its supposed to. Interesting...
I too have been really disatisfied with the air volume through the system. I have checked everything out OK (fan and etc) and ended up finding 2 issues that i corrected and ended up with a marginal improvement in performance: clean the evap through the holoe that the fan mounts and also I removed the screen on the output side of the evap through the resistor hole. The system flows better but it is still not as good as i would expect. Good luck-
Vacuum controls vent position. Temperature is controlled mechanically.
Sound like your temp is good, but that the air isn't going where it's suppose to. Start in the engine compartment at the vacuum source - rear of the plenum and follow that line around the distributor where it's joined to a checkvalve. There it tees off with one side going to cruise and then a tank in the left headlight well. The other side continues throught the firewall to the dash controls (Manual Air) or the Programmer (above and just to the right of the accelerator - Electronic Air). Examine the checkvalve and make sure it isn't broken. Air/vacuum should only flow through it in one direction. If that's good, you'll need to make sure there's vacuum at the Dash or Programmer and also the 3 solenoids on the heater box. When vacuum is applied to a solenoid, it opens or closes a door controlling air flow. You can test each one with a vacuum pump.
The amount of air is a function of blower speed and duct work integrity. First step is to see if it works any better with the blower jumpered directly to the battery. If so, it isn't getting full power. If not, the squirrel cage may be broken or more probably, the air is leaking out of the duct work. It's sealed with foam and that deteriorates with age. Remove the top pad and seal the joints with duct tape or whatever is handy from Home Depot. Also feel around the Evaporator Case on the firewall and at the case halves. Seal any airleaks.
