Default Service Engine Soon & Now

I have a 96 LT4, that doesn't get used very often, but a few weeks ago the Service Engine Soon light came on. I let the fuel level get down to reserve, and then filled it up, thinking maybe after the long winters rest, new gas in the tank would solve the problem. I took it out today, and in addition to the light, I am now getting a noise around the belt/pulley area that sometimes sounds like a bird chirping, and other times more of a continual screech.

I will take it to the chevy dealer tomorrow, but any ideas as to what it might be?

Thanks.

You will have to pull the code with an OBDII diagnostic tool. The SES light means the PCM has seen something/voltage out of it's range. Autozone will pull the code for free. As for the noise, it could be a few things. See if the serp belt is in good shape. You can also take it off and spin the pullys to see if any make noise. Possible a bad bearing.

Alt could be going causing you SES light." drop in volts"
Like RRT VETTE said a bearing or belt could be slipping do to a bad bearing in Alt.

Good Luck
