Default Too loud!

I can't take it.

Full length hooker headers, hooker 3" hooker y-pipe into a single 3" cat, then it's the STOCK catback with brand new STOCK mufflers.

It's loud. I don't like it. I hate it. wtf?

What do you guys think. If i put two 3" bullet cats right after the headers, then neck down to 2 1/4" all the way into the mufflers, and have a cross over pipe somewhere to reduce resonance?

Anyone running hooker 2149 with dual cats?

My .02 I don't think reducing the pipe size will make that much difference. Two bullet cats will help tone down the noise level, and a crossover on the rear Y should help resonance.

What exactly is 'drone' ? It's low, it's bassy, and loud when you get on it. At idle, the pipes are soo tingy it's not even funny. Which could be the overlap of the cam letting too much fuel explode in the exhaust. maybe running cats closer to the headers would cure that? If you stand behind it, it's lump and bass.

No raspy high pitch noise like the flowmaster. Just bassy loud.
Too loud for me.

I just installed Hooker headers, 2.5" dual exhaust back to the factory mufflers and tailpipes. Not nearly as loud as I expected. I think the "drone" and "resonance" mainly comes from running into a Y pipe after the headers. Try true dual exhaust and see what it sounds like. I am planning on adding performance BBK cats, but wanted to just run true dual pipes to see how loud it would be. It sounds great, not loud at all from in the car. (Mine is an '89 that is prettymuch all stock other than the exhaust)

Hrmm.. Well.. Mine is not stock at all. Which is probably part of it.

Anyone have any bullet cats right off the headers? I'd love to run a pair, if they fit.

Push a tight wad of Steel Wool into one pipe on each side, sounds crazy but it works liek a charm and its reversible.

Hi, I'm running bullet cats right out the header collectors, in fact we cut the flanges off, cats slid into collectors then into factory resonator and dynamax mufflers. Have only used this setup for the last 2 weeks. I certainly did not think of it to be loud. This is on a 94 Lt1 , 383 stroker.

If it were me Id go duals w/cats..to a magnaflow resonator (PN#39333??Summit caries it))then to 2.5" (dual 3" after the resonator will make it louder) duals and your stock muffs. Bet youd love the car again.

I was thinking 3" bullet cats right off the header, then 2 1/4" all the way back to the stock mufflers.

Mid-america sells a 2 1/4" dual exhaust setup from manifolds back for $250. I'm thinking cut the fronts right along side the tranny, and weld some 2 1/4" ID to 3" OD couplers on, and connect to the cat's.

I'd go with a true-dual exhaust...

I have 3" bullet cats on the headers, then the Corsa LT1 exhaust and have zero resonance.

And my motor is far from stock...

Any pix? What cats?

I was looking at these.. I've always used carsound in the past, but the carsound I use (94109) won't likely fit.

Check this link out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tchlink:top:us

So then I figure, buy this whole system, and just cut the front out and connect to the cats.

Opionions?

No pix under the car...I even have a lift...

I used Random Technologies cats...it's in the signature

The whole thing about resonance is the mufflers. Corsa designed their system to eliminate it. If you use anything else (that being anything someone here on the forum has done that works) you will need to have EXACTLY what they have...cats in the same place, cross-over in exactly the same place, same exact mufflers, etc. for it to work for you.

The Corsa system is the best...hands down. All stainless, beautiful workmanship, a quality job all around.

Look for used systems...there are not a lot of them. That's because once they go in, they never come off.

UGg, scrolled too far and didn't see it.

Random eh.. I'll check those out too. What did you use? 141-30000 or 181-30000 ??

Pix would be so helpful. I hope one of you guys can get around to taking some at one point. I have one of my plow trucks on the lift right now, so I won't be able to do this for a week or so. But I can't take the noise.

I don't remember which one...I think they were the metal matrix ones...

Nice thing is they are 3" ID on the inlet and 3" OD on the outlet.

Inlet side slips right over the collectors. With the 3" OD on the outlet, the 2.5" pipes fit right inside snugly and are easy to weld in place.

I can't tell you how fun it is to go to a track and have people look under the car to see a full legal exhaust on this car...it sounds awesome!

I've learned that you get what you pay for...buy a cheap part and you get a cheap part...a stainless system SHOULD last 20+ years...it's a bigger investment up front but no recurring costs associated with it.

Yes mine has true duals 3" to r.tech bullit cats and past the x' necks down to 2 1/2" w/dyna max super turbos. It is relatively quiet, drone is around 1600 rpm. Outside the car is resonably quiet, the interior w/windows up seems louder than outside the car. (This was before I finished it w/LT hangers in the rear).
