I've had my 86 for about 6 months now and the cat was off when I purchased it. At the time I was just excited to get the car and planed on checking into it later but the smell of the exhaust has gotten to much for me. I have read that there are suppost to be some resinators on the front pipe and a cat in the center. Mine has none of these. If I replace the cat in the center will the smell get better? What about the two resinators? It smells like an old car/truck that you would get behind at a redlight. Also the smell is not as bad after the engine has warmed up.
Its a old or maybe rich smell, not a rotten egg smell. Seems like if I stand behind the car when filling with gas, the smell gets on my cloths. The car runs great and has about 90K miles and is pretty much stock. Not sure what mufflers it has. What about a hiflow cat? Will it do the same as a oem replacment? Thanks
Installing either a high flow catalytic converter or a stock converter should help with the smell. Have you checked your spark plugs lately? What do they look like...black, white, tan, worn?
If your AFR is in the correct range and the smell is strong, I would install a new catalytic converter and see if that helps. It needs one of either, anyway. Don't worry about the resinators.
