Added a quart of Dextron III, 400 miles later shift & converter lock-up problems. Anyone else make this dumb mistake? If I change the fluid & filter now am I still in trouble?
As long as you added Dex III to an AUTOMATIC tansmissioin, you did nothing wrong. Dex III superceeds Dex II.
Your problem is not too uncommon. New fluid is a,.... NEW. It is thicker. It will apply more pressure to seals and rings. i.e. A once weak seal may rupture. It also tends to loosen once hardened accumulations of trans junk.
Even the lint of a new filter can cause a stuck valve.
Don't know about the missing qty, probably a yr ago I checked it. Wasn't down a qt either, maybe a half. Wierd though, my first thought was vacuum. Now I don't think so, no rolling idle or other signs. Did replace the brake booster at the same time though. I have no overdrive converter lock-up or solid feel below 2.5k RPM, feels like extreme slipping below around 2k3 RPM, but above that normal if I'm not in OD.
Hi, I had the same problem after replacing my booster. The switches that control lock-up were not set correctly and probably got moved around during the install (It's pretty tight down there). There are two, one for the brake and the other for cruise control. I did not have TC lockup before the correction/adjustment! Make sure that the switches above the brake pedel are set properly. I hope this helps.
Ricks1989Roadster is probably right on with his diagnosis. Likely one of the switches on the brake pedal is mis-adjusted, thus the ECM thinks the brake pedal is pressed. There is a pin on the ALDL that is the signal to the TCC (torque converter clutch). When there is voltage on the pin, the converter will lockup. Attach a test light to ground and to the pin, and drive the car, the light will probably not illuminate at all.
This will diagnose the problem as electrical or internal. My bet is no light. Sorry, my service manual is not here at the moment, or I would tell you which pin. Check your service manual, and do the test. If electrical, verify the switches above the brake pedal.
Also, a misadjusted shift cable/neutral safety switch can cause the same problems. The ECM will not know which gear is selected with the shifter.
