I have a silly question i live in dallas texas and my 85 vette with a tpi failed the state inspection. i took it to a shop to find out what was wrong with it the guy told me that both cats were bad i looked under the car and only saw one. so here is my question how many cats did my vette come with from the factory?

if an 85 is the same as a 86 there are 2 pre-cats directly under the exhaust manifolds and 1 large cat in the middle of the exhaust .
What were the results of the test? Sometimes all you need to do is to get the car hot enough by driving on the freeway for 20 minutes or so just before the test.
There are a number of components that can fail or not be operating properly that will cause the car to fail an emissions test.
Before spending money on a new cat, try checking with a couple more reputable auto repair facilities.
Since the state failed it, can't they tell you WHY? Was it parts or failed the sniffer?
The 85 only has one cat "Stock". It is possable that a prior owner changed things around. Look under and see if you see a "Y" exhaust pipe from the mufflers back to the single cat. If you don't see the "Y" it is likely that some one installed a dual exhaust and you might have two small cats...or NONE

I took one of my older cars to a shop once for a smog pretest. He said it failed and refused to tell me the what part of the test it failed, yet insisted on me paying him to fix it.
Later on I met a coworker who used to work for the shop and he said the owner instructed them on coolant flushes to reuse coolant sometimes because he didn't want to pay the disposal fees.
In other words, never trust a mechanic unless he has no vested interest in the work. (ie, never.)
hey thanks guys i took my car to a state recommended repair shop and i now know that they are shady, they charged me 185.00 dollares to tell me what was wrong with my car. wanted to charge me 1050.00 dollars to do the repairs. i can do all the repairs myself.

$1050 TO DO WHAT??? RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY... i have an 85, and it has ONE cat. there are 8 bolts holding the cat in place + (i think) a couple of sheet metal screws holding the heat shield in place. simple job - make sure you get some PB blaster. order a free flowing cat from summit racing - got mine a couple years ago - price something like $110. that $185 charge should have damn near covered the whole repair! good luck!
